Repent: To Think Differently

Sunday, January 6, 2013
Led by Eric Gintert

Who is Jesus to You?

Savior? What does that mean? Savior from what?
Lord? What does that mean? What does it mean to be Lord?

We need to be lightened!

Matthew 4:17
  • "Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."
  • Jesus' first sermon was "Repent".
  • The kingdom of heaven is a realm. We can be there now if we repent

What Does Repent Mean?

  • Repent means to think differently and reconsider
  • Fleshly repentance is changing your mind about fleshly things. Spiritual repentance is changing your mind about spiritual things.
  • Spiritual repentance is to change your mind about what you think is good verses what God says is good.

Godly Sorrow and Worldly Sorrow: Examples

2 Corinthians 7:10
  • Godly (spiritual) sorrow works repentance but the sorrow of the world works death.
Hebrews 12:16  -  Esau
Esau sought repentance carefully with tears. He didn't think differently about his sins in a spiritual sense, but in a fleshly, regretful sense. He didn't weep because God's will was disobeyed, he wept because he didn't get what he wanted.

Psalm 51  -  David
David sinned because he didn't repent from his evil thoughts. He recognized that his sin was against God and Him alone. There is no doubt that David shed tears over his sin, possible more than Esau did. It's about the heart, not the tears.
Luke 23:39-43  -  Two Thieves on the Cross

One thief was focused on self and the other was focused on God. One repented and had godly sorrow. The other had worldly sorrow that resulted in death, eternally.

Godly sorrow makes us see that we deserve punishment. Repentance isn't a "done did that" one time thing but a continual daily repentance.

Matthew 3:1-8  -  John the Baptist & the Pharisees
John the Baptist came to prepare the way and preach repentance and the remission of sins. When the pharisees came to be baptized, he told them to "bring fruits meet for repentance". They came so that they could look religious and do the new "in thing" that everyone was doing at the time.

Don't Be Naked! - Loins Girt with Truth

The Whole Armor of God This Week: Loins Girt with Truth Click image to enlarge. Sunday, October 14, 2012 Led by Eric Gintert Ephesians 6:10-18 The Whole Armor of God is meant to protect us, that we may be able to stand against the powers and principalities that come against us. What are the Loins Girt about with Truth for? The loins help you to stand. They give you support to stand. They help you to get up when you've fallen. John 8:31-32 The truth makes you free and you'll know His disciples because they continue in His Word. John 14:6 Jesus is the  way, the  truth, and the  life. He is NOT a  way, a  truth, or a  life. Hebrews 13:8-9 The truth of Jesus does not change. Don't be carried away with diverse and strange doctrines. The truth is being trodden down in our day and age. He did not leave us blind in the Word.  How much are we putting our trust in the Lord? We must put on the truth so we're not ca...

The 10 Most Overlooked People in Your Church

Photo credit: https://careynieuwhof.com/8-reasons-most-churches-never-break-the-200-attendance-mark/ This post is in response to the original article by Anne Peterson. Her post on crosswalk.com can be found here: http://www.crosswalk.com/slideshows/the-10-most-overlooked-people-in-your-church.html?p=2 1. Single People It’s hard to believe that most churches overlook this group of people. In my opinion, this is probably the most regarded group. With churches forming so many “ group” activities, this ranks highest with singles groups, youth groups, teen groups, bible study groups, etc.  The author quotes no scripture here for biblical reference for the single to be administered.   1 Cor. 7:24-40 - these verses deals with both the single unmarried as well as the divorced and single. Paul gives teaching how a man and woman who are born again should desire God first, then marriage, if at all. 2. People With Illnesses If you are not part of an asse...

Cleansing the Leper

Sunday, January 8, 2011 Led by Eric Gintert Matthew 8:1-4 (also in Mark 1:40-44 and Luke 5:12-14)  -  Why did Jesus, being the way, the truth, and the life, tell the cleansed leper to go back to the priest according to the law in which Jesus was here to fulfill? Leviticus 13:1-8, 32-34, 43-46  -  According to the law, when a man had leprosy he had to go before the priest who would check on him every seven days to see whether he was clean or unclean according to the signs of the disease. Leviticus 14:1-11  -  If the priest found the man was clean from his leprosy, a sacrifice was to be made. A bird was to be killed in an earthen vessel over running water.  Jesus wanted the man to show the priest what He had done for the leper. The priest was supposed to come the the leper and pronounce him clean but instead the man went to the priest to show that he was clean, not only physically but also spiritually. Jesus was the earthen vessel... G...
