Blasphemy Against the Holy Spirit... a Sin unto Death

Matthew 12:22-37

"But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned." Matthew 12:36-37

  • Justified = "just-as-if-I'd never sinned"; render or regard as innocent, righteous, free
  • Idle = useless or barren, lazy, negative particle
    • Words that are spoken with no effect, they have no real purpose.
    • Cast not your pearls before the swine. (Matthew 7:6)
"...for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh." Matthew 12:34

  • Most religions think God (or who they call god) looks and rewards based on their outward person (their good works and performance). But God looks at the heart and sees what is inside them (1 Samuel 16:7).
  • Good treasure of the heart brings forth good things and evil treasure brings forth evil things.
  • You can tell what is on the inside of someones heart by what they bring forth in their life.
  • We must renew and our minds to the Lord because even though our heart may be with the Lord, our minds and flesh are still of this world.
"Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men." Matthew 12:31
  • Blasphemy = evil speaking and railing
    • We've limited the word blasphemy to mean ONLY to use God's name as a curse word but it really means any evil speaking.
Does this mean there is no hope for any person who has spoken something evil? NO!

"And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come." Matthew 12:32
  • To speak evil against the Holy Ghost is to live in unbelief.
  • Evil spoken against Jesus SHALL be forgiven
    • Why did Jesus say "shall"? Because, at the time this was said, He had yet to go to the Cross to put sin to death?
Romans 6:1-2, 5-23

Jesus' death was God's punishment for sin.

"For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him." 2 Corinthians 5:21

"Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise (Hebrew word meaning "to crush") him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand." Isaiah 53:10
  • Jesus became sin, put it to death on the cross, and rose again in 3 days. In the 40 days that he was back on the earth, no one ever called him a sinner or liar.
"For he that is dead is freed from sin." Romans 6:7

"For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace." Romans 6:14

If we would only believe that we are FREE from sin through Christ, we would do more on accident than we ever did on purpose!

How can you know that you are born again? You will know if you are ashamed of sin.

It only takes TWO things to be saved... Grace & Faith.

"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast." Ephesians 2:8-9

"For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Romans 6:23
