Examples of Prayer from Those of Old

Sunday, August 7, 2011
Led by Eric Gintert
We can learn a lot about prayer by reading what God's servants of old have prayed.

"To pray is the greatest thing we can do: and to do it well there must be calmness, time, and deliberation; otherwise it is degraded into the littlest and meanest of things. True praying has the largest results for good; and poor praying, the least. We cannot do too much of real praying; we cannot do too little of the sham. We must learn anew the worth of prayer, enter anew the school of prayer. There is nothing which it takes more time to learn. And if we would learn the wondrous art, we must not give a fragment here and there -- "A little talk with Jesus," as the tiny saintlets sing -- but we must demand and hold with iron grasp the best hours of the day for God and prayer, or there will be no praying worth the name. This, however, is not a day of prayer. Few men there are who pray. Prayer is defamed by preacher and priest. In these days of hurry and bustle, of electricity and steam, men will not take time to pray. Preachers there are who "say prayers" as a part of their programme, on regular or state occasions; but who "stirs himself up to take hold upon God?" Who prays as Jacob prayed -- till he is crowned as a prevailing, princely intercessor? Who prays as Elijah prayed -- till all the locked-up forces of nature were unsealed and a famine-stricken land bloomed as the garden of God? Who prayed as Jesus Christ prayed as out upon the mountain he "continued all night in prayer to God?" The apostles "gave themselves to prayer" -- the most difficult thing to get men or even the preachers to do. Laymen there are who will give their money -- some of them in rich abundance -- but they will not "give themselves" to prayer, without which their money is but a curse. There are plenty of preachers who will preach and deliver great and eloquent addresses on the need of revival and the spread of the kingdom of God, but not many there are who will do that without which all preaching and organizing are worse than vain -- pray. It is out of date, almost a lost art, and the greatest benefactor this age could have is the man who will bring the preachers and the Church back to prayer." -- E.M. Bounds, Power Through Prayer
Jesus in Gethsemane
  • Matthew 26:36-46  -  Jesus asked His closest friends to watch with Him... the word "watch" means to be sober or alert. Jesus fell on His face an prayed prostrate before God. Jesus told His apostles to watch and pray that they enter not into temptation... therefore, if we are not watching and praying then we could be caused to enter temptation. Jesus was persistent in prayer (He came to the Father 3 times to pray for the same thing) but He couldn't depend on or lean on the strength of His friends, only His Father. He didn't let those closest to Him effect his prayer.
  • Mark 14:32-40  -  Jesus asked His friends, "couldest not thou watch one hour? " meaning could they not spare just a short space in time to pray with Him.

Jonah in the Whale's Belly
  • Jonah 2:1-10  -  Jonah was in complete spiritual and physical darkness while he was in the whale's belly. God has to get Jonah alone so He could crush Jonah's heart.
  • Jonah 3:1-10, 4:11  -  Once Jonah repented and God had the whale vomit him out, he ran to Nineveh... what should have been a three day journey took Jonah only one day. The Ninevites put themselves in sackcloth and ashes out of humility  and cried mightily (prayed) unto God. 120,000 people in Nineveh repented.

Don't Be Naked! - Loins Girt with Truth

The Whole Armor of God This Week: Loins Girt with Truth Click image to enlarge. Sunday, October 14, 2012 Led by Eric Gintert Ephesians 6:10-18 The Whole Armor of God is meant to protect us, that we may be able to stand against the powers and principalities that come against us. What are the Loins Girt about with Truth for? The loins help you to stand. They give you support to stand. They help you to get up when you've fallen. John 8:31-32 The truth makes you free and you'll know His disciples because they continue in His Word. John 14:6 Jesus is the  way, the  truth, and the  life. He is NOT a  way, a  truth, or a  life. Hebrews 13:8-9 The truth of Jesus does not change. Don't be carried away with diverse and strange doctrines. The truth is being trodden down in our day and age. He did not leave us blind in the Word.  How much are we putting our trust in the Lord? We must put on the truth so we're not carried away with fa

Don't Be Naked! - The Breastplate

Sunday, September 30, 2012 Led by Eric Gintert Ephesians 6:10-18 The Whole Armor of God Isaiah 59:16-17 This is what God wants us to be clothed with... the very thing He clothed His Son with! Ephesians 6:14 The breastplate protects the heart and desires. 1 Thessalonians 5:4-9 Your heart represents your desires. Are you desiring your own righteousness or His righteousness? Jude 3 says, "...   ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints" yet we're doing the same things as the world. We say that we have our armor on, but really, we're sleeping. William Booth's Breastplate of Righteousness William Booth, founder of the Salvation Army, was not concerned with thrift stores, food lines, and raising money (while all this is a good work and nothing is wrong with the cause). He guarded his heart by having a conc

    For the Love of Money...

Sunday, December 11, 2011 Led by Eric Gintert "For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows." 1 Timothy 6:10 1 Timothy 6:1-21  -  We are commanded to be content with food and raiment... These are our only requirements for life, everything else is extra. The rich have much temptation and snares because of there riches. It is important to note the the scripture states that the love of money is the root of all evil. Money in it's self is not evil. It's the love of money that is evil. Money is also the root of all evil. Much evil starts from an issue of money. We are commanded to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind but we cannot do this is our first love is money. See Matthew 19:23-26, Matthew 6:24, and Matthew 22:37 Exodus 20:3-17  -  We can look at just the ten commandments, God's Law, and see where money is oftentimes at the
